For the third year in a row, junior Breauna Robinson is ready and heavily prepared to combat any challenge West Ashley High’s girls basketball team will face this season. This is her second year in a row earning the honor of Athlete of the Week, and her first year as the Varsity starting point guard.

Robinson began playing basketball seven years ago thanks to the influence of her mother. So far this year, she says her biggest accomplishment was stepping up to the position of starting point guard. “It’s a position that’s a lot of work,” says Robinson. “Sometimes you have to take the fall for everyone else.” West Ashley High is happy to have a confident person such as Robinson to take on this role. “She has the potential to develop into one of the region’s top point guards,” says Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Maria Williams.

Before Christmas break, in a game against Stall, Robinson brought her team to victory after a sweeping performance. “Bre has emerged as the team’s leading scorer with an average of about 16 points-per-game,” says Coach Williams. “She leads by example.” That is a quality most coaches look for in a captain.

Not only does Robinson have a good head on her shoulders, she also really cares about her teammates, and she takes her position as a captain very seriously. When asked what her biggest challenges were she replied, “being the best example I can be and making sure all of my teammates are good on and off the court.” Her ability to motivate her team comes seemingly natural. “Keep your head up no matter what happens,” says Robinson. She claims that these are the words she lives by. West Ashley High is excited to watch Robinson continue to develop as a player and captain.

If Robinson isn’t playing a game, she is usually at practice, working on homework, or at her part-time job at Pizza Hut. Even when she has time to hang out with friends, she can be found with her teammates because they are friends off the court too. Robinson also enjoys hanging out with her grandmother when she has free time.

After graduating from high school, Robinson plans to move onto college to become a pediatrician. “I just really like kids, and I don’t like to see them sick,” says Robinson. She says she’s looking into colleges in North Carolina and Florida. Robinson said she would like to continue to play basketball while she’s in college as well.
