West Ashley High School junior basketball player Ahmad Green has been using his speed on the court to impress his coaches and teammates and give headaches to his opponents. “Ahmad is an outstanding defensive player with tremendous quickness. We feel confident that we can assign Ahmad to guard the opponent’s best backcourt player and he will do his best to contain him,” says varsity basketball coach James DuPre.
“With speed and quickness being his greatest assets, Ahmad spearheads the Wildcats defense,” says DuPre. Although defense seems to be his specialty, Green has recently been a major asset on offense as well. He plays point guard and is willing to do whatever it takes to assist his team. “Ahmad has worked hard after practice to improve offensively,” says DuPre. In a recent game, WAHS faced their biggest rival, Wando High School, and Green made eight free throws late in the game, which according to DuPre, were ultimately what helped the Wildcats seal the victory.
That win put West Ashley in a good position for the first round of Playoffs. “The team plays [well] together and we haven’t been this close to winning regionals in a while,” says Green. Heading into the Playoffs, Green is currently averaging 6 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds per game, which shows his contribution both offensively and defensively.
In addition to staying after practice to work on his game, Green devotes time outside of school and basketball practice to improve his skills while at home with his dad. “We do dribbling and mid-range shooting drills together,” says Green, who admires his dad and brother, and looks to them as role models. When he was younger, Green watched videos of his father playing basketball and was inspired to start playing basketball himself. This is his seventh year playing the sport, and his third season playing for the Wildcats. He considers earning a starting position on Varsity and lettering last year as a sophomore two of his greatest basketball achievements to date.
Green also plays football for WAHS and works a part-time job during the week when he’s not at practice or at games. Despite doing very well in basketball, Green still considers football his favorite sport. “I like to play a contact sport where I can tackle people,” he says. With basketball, football, a part-time job, and school, it’s obvious that Green has a strong work ethic. When he does find time to let loose, he likes to kick back and play video games.
After graduation, Green wants to go to college. Right now his first choice would be any college that offers him a scholarship to play football. However, he wouldn’t be opposed to playing basketball in college if he doesn’t get a football scholarship. He is currently undecided on a major or career path, but he plans to spend his last year in high school figuring that out.
