University of South Carolina freshman Brandon Holmes was recently awarded this year’s $2,000 West Ashley Optimist Club Charles B. Carlisle Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded each year to a West Ashley resident who demonstrates a commitment to high academic performance and civic service. Holmes is the son of Hadiya Williams of West Ashley and is a 2015 graduate of Charleston County School of Arts.
Each year, the West Ashley Optimist Club offers a college scholarship award to a member of the graduating class of either West Ashley High School or the Charleston County School of the Arts. Since 1980, the West Ashley Optimist Club has awarded the scholarship to a West Ashley area senior. The college scholarships are awarded based on a number of criteria including academic excellence, financial need, and involvement in school and community activities, an essay, and references.
