While City Councilmen and the mayor and his staff met last week to recast a new economic future for West Ashley, several potentially stalled important local projects moved forward.
City of Charleston staffers confirmed this week that the bid for the construction of the Northbridge Park, located around the base of the Cosgrove Avenue Bridge, will go out Aug. 6.
That project was temporarily shelved earlier this year after state Department of Transportation requests changed the scope and size of the project. No word on how much the city expects the project to cost, but originally it had budgeted close to $600,000 before the DOT’s requirements were known.
Also confirmed was that the DOT will begin advertising for bids for construction of the Avondale Point intersection between Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Coburg Cow.
In June, local officials criticized the DOT’s decision to not go with the single bid that had come in for a project meant to make that stretch of Savannah Highway more pedestrian safe, after a third person was hit by a vehicle and put in the hospital over a 15-month span.
In October, the city will once again begin accepting bids for the completion of the Higgins Pier Park, located in historic Ashleyville Neighborhood of St. Andrews Boulevard.
The bidding process had already begun earlier this year when it discovered that the city did not own the easement for the pier, and that it belonged to the Lowcountry Open Land Trust.
After another round of design, the pier park, which marks the watery end of the West Ashley Bike Path at the Ashley River, will be advertised for those wishing to submit proposals for its construction.
