William Norman James proudly sits on the front stoop of the “Big House”. The home was located on a tract of land that is now at the corner of Markham and Highway 61. James and the adjacent property owners (Tumblestons) sold property to the SCDOT in order that the new road, Markham, could be constructed. Later the property was sold to Texaco for use as a gas station. (Photograph courtesy of Norma Flood Hancock)
